Whelping Box

• Whelping box will be cleaned at least three times a day.
  • Fresh pads
  • Clean walls, pig rails and any other surfaces.
  • Wipe down all surfaces with 91% IPA to ensure no bacteria is growing.
• Whelping box will be layered.
  • Layer 1 – Waterproof padding.
  • Layer 2 – Padding
  • Layer 3 – Foam padding or knotted sheets to prevent swimming puppies and heating pad.
  • Layer 4 – Padding
• Whelping box will have a heat lamp.
• The temperature of the whelping box will be between 90 and 95 degrees.
• Puppies will nurse every 2hours.
• Puppies will be weighed twice a day until their birthweight has doubled.
  • It is normal for a puppy to not gain or lose weight in the first 2 days. Puppies should gain weight every day after.
• Puppies will be stimulated to poop and pee during every feeding.
• Day 7 and every week thereafter, cut puppies nails to ensure they are not scratching mom and getting fecal matter or bacteria on mom’s c-section scar or in her nipple.

• Female will be given prescribed pain meds.
• Female C-Section scar, vulva and nipples cleaned daily.
• Female will be started on Clavamox for the first 10 days after puppies are born.
  • Clavoxmox will pass through moms’ milk to the puppy and help fight off bacterial infections.
• Female nipples will be expressed daily to confirm milk production, milk color and milk odor. 

Continue to clean whelping box, puppies, mom, and all other areas as listed above.

• Puppies will nurse every 2hours.
• Puppies will begin to open their eyes between 10-14 days and will be examined.
• Puppies will be checked multiple times a day for flat chests and bad sleeping positions.
• Deworm puppies.
• Deworm mom.
• The temperature of the whelping box will be between 80 and 90 degrees.

• Female C-Section scar, vulva and nipples cleaned daily.
• Female nipples will be expressed daily to confirm milk production, milk color and milk odor.

• Start pee pad training.
• Start puppy Gruel.
  • Gruel is 10-12oz of warm water, 1 cup of dog food, 2 tablespoons of 100% pumpkin and 2 tablespoons of generic Greek yogurt. Blend puppy food into a powder and then add all ingredients.
• Begin introducing the puppies to water.
• Mom is no longer with her puppies 24-7 
• Remove heat lamp from whelping box.
  • Only a heating pad remains.
• Socialization and desensitization training (Sounds & Textures).

• C-Section scar, vulva and nipples cleaned daily.
• Increased calories and vitamins.
  • Satin Balls may be given.

• Deworm puppies.
• Feed mush and reduce the water gradually.
• Give puppies a puppy toy gym.
• Heating pad on low
• Playing and interacting with puppies daily.
• Move female into her own kennel as she needs her space away from puppies. Allow female to play with puppies daily with toys. 

• Start puppies on softened puppy kibble.
• Give puppies teething toys.
• Playing and interacting with puppies daily.

• Dry up females milk supply over the next week.

• Deworm puppies.
• Introduce puppy kibble. No more mush.
• Playing and interacting with puppies daily.
• Puppies are usually completely pee pad trained.
